Really moving on

The night before I started my ex-job in 1999, I was so excited I didn't sleep. It was never just a job; I was a big fan of the show. Barring VCR or TiVo mishaps, I watched every single episode. I read the fan boards on the Web.

At the same time, the work was stressful, detailed, time-consuming. I pulled a few all-nighters and many late-nighters. While the people were for the most part great, at times there were personal issues.

So when I wasn't hired back this season, part of me was relieved. The work could be unrelenting, and I was happy on hiatus and not ready to step back into the grind. Without a full-time job, the prospect of retirement became extremely appealing; it still is, but I keep taking on other work.

Why am I bringing this up now? Because today I thought I'd start watching the old episodes going back to May that are clogging up my TiVo. It has not had room to record anything since October 24.

I watched one contestant on the May 9 episode, and then... deleted the rest of the episode. And all the old episodes from last season. Without watching! Then I watched the first 2 episodes of this season, including a zany contestant who made great, entertaining television. The show really is good TV. Then I took a breath and deleted the rest of the episodes.

I kept the show in my Season Pass, but changed "keep until I delete" to "when space needed" so unwatched episodes will just scroll off. It is just another show. If I catch it, I catch it. If not, it's gone.

My "to do list" immediately filled up with all the other shows I haven't been watching for months. There is a whole world out there of shows to TiVo. I'm not in the credits of any of them, and that's OK.
