Living in the past

With a high school reunion coming up in two weeks, the past has been on my mind.

I graduated high school in 1969 (if you're doing the math, I skipped kindergarten, so subtract a year, OK?), went to the 10th, 20th and 30th reunions, and even went with my sister (class of '70) to her 20th. My 30th was so amazing that our organizers didn't want to wait another 10 years; besides, we'd all be in walkers and wheelchairs by the 40th. However, other commitments made it difficult for them to put an event together in 2004.

So on June 11th, Great Neck North will celebrate its 36th reunion (why not). We old fogeys even have a Web site http://greatnecknorthclassof69.com/.

In recent days, the E-mails have been flying - Are you going? Is so-and-so going? It looks like I'll be seeing my best friend from junior high for the first time in 36 years, and other friends are planning to attend.

In the spirit of all this, I began wondering what happened to elementary school classmates who went to the other high school; most of Kensington went to Great Neck South, so that was the vast majority of my classmates. So the E-mails have been flying in that direction, too; these are people I haven't seen in over 40 years! South '69 has a class newsletter, and I'm amazed how many names are familiar.

What all this has to do with the present, I'm not sure. But I'm fascinated with how people change - or don't change. I of course look exactly the same. :0
