They don't make themes like they used to...
...And it's a good thing.
From the Will Weng-edited collection I've been working on forever, a 21 by H.H. Reddall, "Stacked Decks." The blurb says, "A few glances at the world of cards."
I wasn't happy when one of the theme entries was MARKED CARDS, duplicating the CARDS in the blurb. Then I filled in CARD SHARP.
The duplication of CARD isn't the only problem. The symmetrical entry for each theme entry isn't always also a theme entry:
TOURNAMENTS goes with MARKED CARDS (OK)
PARTNERS goes with TOENAILS (oops)
LOSER PAYS goes with CARD SHARP (OK)
THREE NO TRUMP goes with EMPLACEMENTS (clued "Gun platforms"; oops)
I couldn't find this puzzle in the NYT database so it must be an old Crosswords Club.
