CD stores?
My Google-Fu is failing me. Does anyone know of a brick and mortar store that carry international CDs, like say, from Germany and the Middle East? I've tried J&R and Barnes & Noble; they have very slim pickings. I have no particular area preference. Anywhere in the 5 boroughs is fine, as long as it's reachable by public transportation. Thanks for any help. |

Subway Preacher Tip #403: Know Your Audience. http://www.overheardinnewyork.com/archives/019743.html Jamaican man: The biggest issue of our society is not terrorism but men lusting after women's butts! If you lust after women's butts you will burn in hell! Women, do not show off your butts for you will burn in hell! Do not wear jeans or tight pants! Make sure you cover up your butts! Passenger: I love the butts. Jamaican man: Do you have no soul? The lust of the women's butts will only bring you to the devil! Please save yourself and stop lusting after the butts! Passenger: Who loves the butts? All men on train: Yay butts!

this might be the first time i miss having a car
When I first moved to New York I was lucky enough to find a furnished place, but I am moving again and this time I need furniture. As opposed to spending full price at Ikea or something for things like a desk, a dresser, etc, I was thinking craigslist. Then I realized that I don't have a car and I don't think people would take kindly to me schlepping a desk or something equally as large (yeah right) on to the subway. So I wanted to know how you guys move large pieces of furniture when/if you buy them off craigslist (unless you can recommend a nice cheap furniture place that delivers haha). Do you all happen to have a buddy with a car, do you use a large cab, do you trust "the man with a van", do you rent a zip car for the day? Ugh. I checked the tags and all i got was moving trucks, but I didn't know if there was a less extreme way to do it, especially for only 2 pieces at most. Thanks for the help |

frames?
Anyone know of a good store in Manhattan (or south Brooklyn) that sells cheap DIY frames? Looking to frame some 11x14 and 16x20 photos. Usually I go to Blick Arts but I was wondering if I was missing anything, thanks. |

My wonderful doctor just moved to Massachusetts! Help! Looking for a female GP on the east side (preferably in midtown; I work on 46th) who's friendly, has a helpful and friendly staff, and will take Oxford. Anyone love their doctor and want to make a plug for her? (I checked all the tags, but nada). Thanks guys! |

I am visiting NYC for three weeks in October and am looking for an apartment to rent. I have found one that I am happy with but I would like to gain some insight on the area. It is approximately 10th Avenue and W 47th St, Hell's Kitchen. Also, is there any specific area for alternative music, shopping and eating? Any help would be appreciated! |

The Lord Giveth, and the Lord Taketh Away http://www.overheardinnewyork.com/archives/019736.html Tacky girl #1: Why do I feel like every time I gain a friend, I lose a friend? Tacky girl #2: (silence) Tacky girl #1: It's like AIM buddy lists, like when you max, you know? You have to delete a friend to add a new one, you know? My friendships are all like that, you know? Tacky girl #2: I don't think it works like that. Tacky girl #1: Yeah, you're right. (pause) Tacky girl #2: Well, if it was like that, who would decide? Tacky girl #1: Umm...god? Tacky girl #2: Well, maybe whoever's deciding is telling you to look at the friends you do have, and, like, see if they're worth it. Tacky girl #1: Ohmigod! You are so good. How did you get so good?

Where to buy musical intruments?
Hello. I will be heading up to NYC sometime this month to go shopping and I was looking for recommendations as to where to buy old or odd musical instruments? Stuff like old synthesizers, or like foreign instruments like harmoniums or zithers... I'm looking for specific stores with addresses (I have asked elsewhere only to be told to check thrift stores and flea markets, but of course there are many). Thanks to anyone who can help! P.S. I will be moving to NYC in the fall for school so I'm glad there is a community like this! Current Music: The Smiths - London | Powered by Last.fm |

Up In My Chili
Way late into the season, went to my first ballgame of the year today: Braves @ Nationals with Jeff and Chris M, visiting in advance of this week's convention. As usual when they actually do win, the Nats snatched victory from the jaws of a defeat snatched from the jaws of victory. And I felt pleased when, on Metro after the game, Chris was texting with the friend he's staying with the next couple days and she said that he had better have had Ben's Chili Bowl while at the park. And what was it I made sure he ate? A Ben's half-smoke, all the way. A sausage with mustard, onions, cheese, and a thick coat of delicious chili. Being used to Boston, Chris was astounded at the quality of food, the ease of moving around the stadium, the openness of the place, and the affordability. I realized that maybe DC does have the best stadium food I've had. Outside Milwaukee, anyway. Mmmmmm, Milwaukee sausage. |

Land-Line Phones
I'm thinking about getting a landline phone in my apartment in Brooklyn, but I've been resisting all this time because my cell phone has done me fine, and New York just seems to be such a cell phone city. Can anyone lay out the pros and cons of getting a landline in NYC? |

Because I trust you guys more than Yelpers.
Any good, and moderately priced (up to $20/entrée) French restaurants in Brooklyn or lower than Midtown Manhattan? Our anniversary happens to fall on Bastille Day, so we're continuing the tradition of going to a French restaurant to celebrate. |

La Belle Époque was a time of artistic and intellectual abandon. Painters, poets, philosophers, and the cleverest of rogues mingled at cabarets and salons to indulge in the Bohemian sensuality of the creative life. The connoisseurs of art, thought, and expression celebrated the tumult of the age in high class and with impeccable style. We hope to inspire you to do the same on this special night in one of the true jewels of NYC. ( Read more... ) |
